“Hoyo” literally means “hole” and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.  Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.

The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey’s blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity.

Hoyo de Monterrey was the first brand to introduce a Petit Robusto in 2005, the 50 ring gauge size with a shorter length to suit those who like thicker formats, but do not always have the time to enjoy them.

The brand was form in Cuba in 1865 by José Gener y Batet. Hoyo de Monterrey means ‘hole of Monterrey’, referring to the low position of the plantation which Gener bought.

Tasting notes

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 2 is one of the world’s most popular cigars, and for good reason. The cigar is totally handmade using the very best tobacco leaves in Vuelta Abajo – Cuba’s premier cigar growing region.

The construction is flawless and contains a double band, which gives it a very sophisticated appearance. It provides a pleasant, smooth smoke and strong tobacco taste that’s not too overpowering, giving it just enough room for the cocoa, dried fruit and cinnamon flavours to shine through.

Even when the leaves are young it has an even combustion – although it’s best left stored in a humidor for a while. The Hoyo de Monterrey is a cigar for seasoned smokers, however, novices are encouraged to give it a try to see just how complex and flavoursome a fine cigar can be.
